My Shoes Left Behind

Shaima Badry (+Video)

Eight-year-old Shaima Badry begins her epic journey from Iraq in the white sandals she insists on wearing. Soon they break, and she is forced to walk barefoot to the Iran/Iraq border. The journey takes her family – her father, four sisters, and her pregnant mother – through mountains and minefields. At the border, a man gives her a pair of boys’ shoes. They are not pretty, but at least they are shoes.
